...and why 1259?

Why 1259? More than 3,200 years ago, the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II and the Hittite Great King Hattusili III concluded the first surviving peace treaty in human history. A copy of it hangs outside the entrance to the UN Security Council in New York today as a reminder of the apparent fact that humanity recognised the value of peace early on. This account of the treaty is perhaps somewhat glorified. But one fact remains: A treaty was ratified back then. And before this could happen, some of the world's powerful had come to realise that when interests differed, one could meet not only on the battlefield but also in a negotiation. The surviving copy of the treaty is dated one year before our era: the year 1259. Hence:
